Nugget Markets Announces 2014 School Garden Grant Recipients

Woodland, CA - Nugget Markets partners with Davis Farm to School and Yolo Farm to Fork in support of school garden programs throughout Yolo County. Yolo Farm to Fork offers competitive matching grants for school gardens, coordinators, supplies, volunteers, workshops, and networking opportunities.

This year, Davis Farm to School, a program of Yolo Farm to Fork, awarded 13 schools with garden grants, and Nugget Markets is providing an additional $250 matching grant to five of those schools that demonstrated new, innovative and creative educational experiences through the garden program, offered a wide range of hands-on multi-grade learning activities involving many subjects and classes, and presented a unique and clear vision for the garden’s future and plans for sustainability.

The Nugget Markets grant recipients for the 2014 school year are Holmes Jr. High, Davis School for Independent Study, and King High School in Davis, and Plainfield Elementary and Dingle Elementary in Woodland. Nugget Markets has committed to this matching grant effort to support and enrich local students through garden-based learning.

“Coming alongside Davis Farm to School and Yolo Farm to Fork in support of local schools and their gardens is a natural fit for Nugget Markets,” Kate Stille of Nugget Markets.“These school gardens are vital in providing our kids and our community with a wide range of grade-level appropriate academic and educational experiences, and solid and engaging lessons in nutrition, sustainability, and community awareness that last a lifetime.”

“This takes best practices of a successful school garden program to another dimension as Nugget Markets enhances efforts to create sustainable gardens at school sites,” says Beth Harrison, executive director of Yolo Farm to Fork. “It’s a pleasure to partner with Nugget Markets for these valuable Yolo County school projects.”

Family-owned locally and devoted to community since the first Nugget Market opened in 1926, Nugget Markets also remains committed to offering quality products and to supporting local area farmers, producers, and local neighborhoods.  For more information, visit www.nuggetmarket.com.
