“Summer Hydration”Dr. Liz

Nugget Markets’ Health Notes
Liz Applegate, Ph.D.

  1. How much should your hydration increase during the summer? Hydration needs increase 50 percent in the summer months. Ten to twelve servings of fluids is a good goal.
  2. If I exercise during summer, how much should I be drinking? 5-12 ounces of fluid for every fifteen minutes of exercise is what you need.
  3. Should I wait until I’m thirsty before I drink something? No, by the time you’re feeling thirsty you’ve already lost two or more cups of your total body water composition. Keep drinking throughout the day.
  4. What should I be hydrating with? Water (tap or bottled), iced tea, soda (you don’t just have to consume water, but be mindful of beverage calories).
  5. What are the signs of dehydration? If you’re mildly dehydrated, you’ll be thirsty, your mouth and lips will be dry and your urine will be dark yellow. If you’re really dehydrated, you might feel lightheaded and nauseous, your skin may be clammy; you might feel weak; your urination decreases and your heartbeat may be rapid.
  6. Is it okay to drink sports drinks? In workouts lasting one hour, you need to replenish carbohydrates as well as water. Sports drinks provide both. You want a drink that’s 5 to 8 percent carbs.
  7. What tips to you have for keeping kids hydrated? Parents have to monitor their hydration and activity. They probably won’t tell you that they’re dehydrated. Offer them beverages they enjoy. Take beverages to your summer activities for them to drink.
  8. What about eating fruit – does that help hydration? Fruit and vegetables with a high water content like watermelon definitely count!
  9. When should I start drinking? Start your day with a glass of water and also drink one before bedtime – you also lose water as you sleep.
