This tasty toffee is a classic confection that's buttery and crisp.
- 2½ cups sugar
- 2 cups butter
- ⅓ cup water
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- 1½ cup chopped walnuts
- 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips
Butter a 15- x 10-inch baking pan (a.k.a. a jelly roll pan). In a heavy-bottom 4-quart sauce pan fitted with a candy thermometer, combine the sugar, butter, water, and corn syrup. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until mixture reaches 300°F, about 40 minutes. Stir in 1 cup walnuts. Pour into the prepared baking pan. Working quickly, top with the chocolate chips and spread evenly. Sprinkle on the remaining ½ cup walnuts. Cool completely, about 3 hours. Break into pieces.
