If you love oysters, we’ve got great news for you! Premium Hog Island Oysters are now available at Marin County Nugget Markets and Sonoma Market! Based in Tomales Bay, California, Hog Island Oyster Company was founded in 1983 with the mission of growing the very best shellfish in harmony with nature. Their dedication to sustainable farming has made them one of the most respected aquaculture operations in the nation.
Since oysters are filter feeders, water quality and cleanliness are key to safe and delicious shellfish. That’s why Hog Island chose the beautiful waters of Tomales Bay to farm their oysters, and why they’re involved in the protection and restoration of the Tomales Bay watershed. To ensure top-notch quality and safety, Hog Island shellfish also spend at least 24 hours in state-of-the-art seawater holding tanks where they are UV filtered and chilled before heading to market.
Fun Fact: Similar to wine, oysters can taste very different depending on their species, where they’re grown (their “merroir”) and how they’re grown. Hog Island’s Sweetwater Oysters, for example, are Pacific oysters cultivated specifically to have stronger shells and better meat quality. Their meat is plump and full-bodied with a complex, rich taste and a smoky-sweet flavor. Find small and medium Sweetwater Oysters fresh in our meat department!
