Ever wondered the secret to picking out the perfect watermelon? What about the right way to store a cantaloupe? Wonder no more! Get the inside scoop right here on how to make the most of sweet summer melons while they're still in season.
HOW TO SELECT
- Watermelons: Look for a heavy, round melon with larger webbing and a yellow patch (a.k.a. field spot) which indicates ripeness. Bonus points if you can find little black crystals of sugar sap on the rind!
- Other Melons: Choose a melon that’s heavy for its size and firm but with a little give. Some melons are very fragrant when ripe (especially on the end), but others are subtler, so you have to go by touch.
HOW TO STORE
- Watermelons: Store whole watermelons at room temperature until right before you’re ready to eat, as prolonged refrigeration can make them mealy. Once cut, store covered in the fridge.
- Other Melons: Most other melons will continue to ripen off the vine, so store at room temperature until they’re at your desired ripeness, then store whole or cut in the fridge until ready to eat.
